The "myths" of health care reform

I’m going to make something very clear here in the beginning. Facts that I cite here in this blog are from the house health care bill, HR 3200 “America’s Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009.” Obama, Frank, and Pelosi can say all they want, but I will only be citing the bill itself. Now, I’ve been digging into the internet gathering up a list of those pesky, dangerous, ultra-right wing rumors and myths that everyone is talking about, I’ll be going point by point, after each “myth” I will list the sections of the bill that point out the facts for the particular “myth.” I’m not going to post the full text of the sections on here, because they are quite long. However, on the Library of Congress website, there is a service called THOMAS, where you can look up the full text of the legislation and read it, just in case you thought I was making this up. Ok, let’s begin.

1) Americans will lose their private insurance, or be funneled into the public option.

Under Sec. 102 (a)(1) LIMITATION ON NEW ENROLLMENT
Sec. 102 (a)(2) LIMITATION ON CHANGES IN TERMS OR CONDITIONS
So, insurance companies cannot accept new enrollments or change the terms or conditions of their current plans.

2) Health care reform will limit patient’s choices.

Sec. 123 HEALTH BENEFITS ADVISORY COMMITTEE

Sec. 141 HEALTH CHOICES ADMINISTRATION; HEALTH CHOICES COMMISSIONER

There will be a committee designated largely by the president in charge of deciding your benefits, and an administration, largely appointed by the president, will decide what standards constitutes coverage. That applies to private companies as well.

3) Health care reform will grant the federal government access to people’s bank accounts.

Sec. 163 ADMINISTRATIVE SIMPLIFICATION
Subsection 1173A GOALS STANDARDIZED ELECTRONIC ADMINISTRATIVE TRANSACTIONS
(a)(2) GOALS FOR FINANCIAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE TRANSACTIONS

The federal government will establish access to people’s bank accounts for electronic transactions and to determine the financial stability of patients.

4) Death panels.

Sec. 1233 ADVANCED CARE PLANNING CONSULTATION

As illustrated throughout this section. Every five years you SHALL (not, you MAY be visited. You SHALL…) be visited by advanced care consultants, to consider options such as living wills, health care proxy, hospice care, assisted suicide, and ‘your life, your choice’ handbooks. Now, if you’re going to this section looking for the specific phrase “death panel” is going to be disappointed. The term “death panel” is a metaphor for government guidance into death.
I’ve outlined the major “myths out there, if you have one that I forgot to mention or want to challenge me on, leave a comment, and I’ll get back to you on it. Enjoy.

  1. Paris, Yerevan, Algiers, Nuku'alofa,e -- each has its own special, even exotic, charm. But for the weary traveler, there's no place like home.
Smilin' Jack, my crew chief, and the rest of the lads were pushing the Hawker into its hangar almost before my feet touched the tarmac, then fetched my bags and the arms case. Besides the hunting rifles, I'd taken two custom m4's and a pair of Beretta 92s. I was still wearing the kangaroo skin DeSantis shoulder holster that sheathes the Ruger .38. That always stays with me. Can't be too carful, you see what I'm saying?
The Hummer raced down the desert road. Good old Foster, right on time. He was my father's driver and now he drives for me. The Hummer screeched to a halt a next to the arms case. Foster jumped out -- no easy feat, I'd guess, at his age.
"Welcome home," he said. "And call Dr. Chu."
R.S.J. Chu is a retired NASA meteorologist and science advisor to a group of activists I funde, called American Efts for Liberty and Union (AELU).
"What's he want?" I asked Foster.
"It seems, sir, that the editor of the Republic refused to publish the article he sent in."
"Typical liberal media bias," I said. "What does he want me to do?"
"Dr. Chu said -- I believe these are his very words -- that perhaps you would want to call the publisher and remind him of the Second Amendment."
    I mad the call.
"Chu here," the high-pitched voice said.
"Eagle has landed," I said. "It's your globe-girdling pal, Will K."
"Did Foster tell you what I want?"
"A vague idea, yes. What did this article of yours say?"
"It reminded them of the leftist media's complicity in the greatest exploitation of public fear and ignorance in recent decades. I pointed out that global temperatures have leveled out this decade.I wrote that the notion that CO2 can cause global warming is ludicrous and without foundation. Hell, the damned polar bears were around way before the Eemian, which was much hotterthan it is today. The bears survived then and they'll survive now -- as if I gave a shit one way or the other about the damn bears. But facts are facts. Climate change is a non-working theory and the more research goes into it, the more wrong it becomes. And that idiot editor wouldn't print the facts."
"I hear you," I said. "I read an article in my hotel room in Bangkok that said the Guadalupe mountains in Texas were really islands that formed in a prehistoric sea a couple of million years ago, which would have been even before God created the planet! I suppose there are imbeciles who think that the polar ice will melt, the imaginary sea will form again and only the mountain peaks will be above water! These crackpots are ruled by emotion, not reason."
"Anyway," Chu said, "will you make the call or not?"
"I've got a better idea," I said. "Let's both drive over there and talk to the publisher in person. We could take my new Bentley. . .."
"Can't," Chu said. "Gotta go up to Telluride for a few days. My cabin is almost finished and I've got to furnish it."
"You're putting up a cabin in Telluride?"
"Not exactly 'in' Telluride. Up the mountain, overlooking the town."
"Kind of high and remote for a vacation retreat, isn't it?"
"Well," Chu said, "I might wind up living there. You see, I can't swim."
